On June 16, 2024, Nickel Plate Road 765, a 2-8-4 S-2 Berkshire steam locomotive, was captured powering through the countryside on the Tri-State Excursion between Edon, Ohio, and Hillsdale, Michigan. This historic locomotive, renowned for its "superpower" technology, was originally built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1944 and restored to its former glory by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. In the photograph, the engine can be seen emitting plumes of smoke as it makes its way through the rolling hills and farmland during the late morning. The Nickel Plate Road 765 stands 15 feet tall, weighs 404 tons, and is one of the few remaining operational mainline steam engines in North America. Volunteers exclusively power and maintain this iconic symbol of American railroading heritage.
